ACTIVATED OSHC

Promoting health and balance in Outside School Hours Care

NOSHSA's involvement and endorsement

As the national representative body for outside school hours care, NOSHSA has been closely involved with Activated OSHC from its inception through to implementation. Our participation includes contributing to grant proposals, participating in needs assessments, and providing sector expertise to ensure the program's relevance.

We endorse this program because it addresses a significant need within the sector: practical, achievable approaches to increase physical activity and manage screen time appropriately.

Key benefits for your service

  • Evidence-based approach: Developed with input from the OSHC sector, the program integrates smoothly with existing service operations.

  • Quality framework alignment: Services implementing Activated OSHC are 7 times more likely to meet physical activity guidelines - valuable evidence for quality assessment.

  • Straightforward implementation: Clear guidance, practical resources, and ongoing support make the program accessible for all services.

  • No-cost program: The program is available to all Australian OSHC services at no expense.

Program components

Activated OSHC delivers comprehensive support through:

  • Professional development modules for coordinators and educators

  • Structured guidance for developing a tailored Physical Activity and Screen Time Policy

  • Practical strategies adaptable to your service's unique environment

  • Official recognition as an Activated OSHC provider (valid for three years)

The research results are compelling. Services fully implementing the Activated OSHC approach are:

  • 7 times more likely to meet physical activity guidelines

  • 5.6 times more likely to meet screen time recommendations

  • More effective at engaging children in meaningful physical activity

Beyond these statistics, we've observed how the program positively transforms the atmosphere in OSHC environments, with more engaged children, confident staff, and vibrant activity.

“The program is like a community, we are like a family here. After School Care is like the modern neighbourhood, children of primary school age coming together and playing in our OSHC neighbourhood. Work in OSHC is appealing for many educators because it is fun and dynamic and the children are so creative and inspiring. It’s awesome to watch them learn and grow in OSHC.” Coordinator

“My interactions with the children are the most integral part of my job, they are the reason I’m here. Their individuality, their humour, their growth and their agency. It is rewarding and joyful to be a part of the children’s day to day lives.” Educator

The National Outside School Hours Services Alliance (NOSHSA) acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to culture, land, waterways and communities.  We pay our respects to them and their cultures, and to the elders both past and present.
